This is a continuation of my report on the “New Game of Voiceover Success” teleseminar with Susan Berkley last Thursday.
The “dirty little secret” about online auditions that no one ever talks about is the fact that most auditions submitted online don’t get listened to. Of those that actually do get listened to, another 80% or so get trashed.
Are we feeling good yet?
The truth is, 80% of those online auditions get deleted because of the following issues:
1) Poor sound quality. Hissing, low resolution files without a clean sound. Remedy: Have a quiet place to make recordings using quality equipment and software.
2) Speech patterns, dialects or regionalisms. Remedy: Midwestern American English lilt is the standard- lose the southern drawl, etc.
3) Mouth Noise- pops, clicks, too low volume. Remedy: Hydrate constantly, use a spray bottle to spray tongue and teeth, or use Entertainer’s Secret, or Salivart. Avoid dairy, caffeine, oily and/fried foods before recording.
4) Your voice is not in the vocal range , type, or doesn’t have the vocal tonal qualities in the producer’s or client’s mind: Remedy: None. He/she may hire the one who reminds his/her of a personal friend.
Tomorrow – The 3 Laws of Voiceover Success.
