Day 1: Dan O’Day Int’l Radio Creative & Production Summit

by | Business, Training, Voiceover

Well I woke up early and hit the road for the LAX Hilton, site of the 14th Annual Dan O’Day Summit soiree. The hotel was nice enough to allow me to check in early, which was wonderful, and I had ample time to get situated and get to registration by the 9:45 AM start time .

The morning session  covered a mind expanding exercise on copy writing/editing. Writing copy has been part of my past as a producer/creative, and was enlightening. This sort of thing can help those just perforning voiceovers as well.

Lunch was wonderful! And so was the company. (L-R) Ben Wilson, Pam Tierney, Eric Souer, Bob Souer and me.

Viva la vo-bb

Me, Christine Coyle of the Radio Ranch, and Rowell Gormon.
Christine presented an excellent PM session and directed many of the voice talents in a number of extremely well written radio commercials. The outcome  of a spot can change immensely with even the slightest adjustment of attitude and pace in the read. It’s all about being able to listen to your scene partner, tell the story and to extract the intention via performance.

The last item of the day was a 5 minute networking exercise that rendered my voice almost gone, and a very dry mouth. However, this was totally worth the amount of fabulous ideas and contacts. What a great way to get to meet everyone on the first day!

Well, time to post this and get to bed. Tomorrow is another jam-packed day with Dave Foxx on radio production & imaging and Nancy Wolfson with a demo critique session followed by “Voice Acting for Advertising”. Can’t wait!
