Thoughts on Columbus Day

When I was in school in the midwest, we used to get this day off school.  It appears this day is actually celebrated more widely in the eastern US. However today, all that closed were banks and government offices around these parts. Then my husband told me there are some factions of folks who don’t like Columbus for political reasons having to do with native American Indians and diseases and other concerns. Oh come on!

All I can say I am thankful to Columbus, darn-it-all!

Here is a guy who laid it on the line, including his life! He had (and still does have) naysayers…even his crew was planning to mutiny just before they finally sighted land.  Chris was warned that if he sailed “out there”, his ships would fall off the edge of the earth, because as we have learned, in 1492, it was believed the earth was flat!

But Columbus, was a believer in his own destiny. Talk about taking risks. And preparation. Heck he’s an inspiration to this voice actress to continue to push her own limits and take risks every day, in every read.

I truly believe wouldn’t be here doing what I am doing if Columbus didn’t set sail to find the “New World”.

Just since the beginning of this month I’ve been working for clients in Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Georgia, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, and the Silicon Valley. I thank Columbus today, because  I am here, in the “New World”, working on a computer , using ISDN and the internet, the technology all pioneered here.

The voiceover world is….flat! And I am thankful for that fact, and Columbus’ bold, tenacious bravery. Happy Columbus Day!
