Eat, Pray, Audition (not necessarily in that order)

by | auditions, Personal

This Blog is sometimes like my confessional!

I’ve been hard at work this month doing a number of things while everyone in the business seems like they’re on vacation, or their clients are. Everyone deserves a break. Vacation is so absolutely necessary.
It’s been a fantastic year, and a relaxing summer to an extent…But I’m ready to ramp it up again!

I’ve been taking care of the garden this summer. Weeding, watering, fertilizing, and harvesting a bumper crop of tomatoes, beans, peaches, eggplant, pumpkins, onions , herbs, and zucchini has had me doing a ton of food processing.

I’ve been making soups, salads, casseroles, drying. You get the idea,
Heck,  if you have a garden, you’d better not allow the harvest to go to waste. So we’ve been eating a lot of fresh stuff lately around here and it’s all good.

I am certainly  glad I work from home and my business hasn’t been super busy with deadlines. Like I say, August has typically been slower in general, before the fourth quarter madness. I can feel  some kind of vibe that the industry will become very busy. I  always hope  and pray it will be for me as well. I try to never pray for just myself, but  rather, for others or about specific situations.

I’ve had some special intentions I’ve been praying and meditating on fervently as of late.

And what’s been occupying my working hours as far as voiceover,  is a ton of auditioning. Like my friend Bob Bergen says, “Auditioning is hard work”.
And there has been some quality stuff arriving in my inbox from all sorts of places. The obvious desire is to create something from the opportunity before me. And book!

So as the summer winds its way down, as me and my family eat the “fruits of our labor”, I’ll continue to audition better each and every day, and keep praying with each one I send out.

Eat, pray, audition. And not necessarily in that order.

  1. …great advice, Bobbin. Auditioning keeps you sharp and focused–not to mention creative…

  2. Hi Herb!
Welcome. Thanks so much for stopping by. It was so nice meeting at VOICE this summer. And yes, I agree that auditioning pushes the creative process that can make a voiceover actor/actress improve their performance…and their odds.

  3. that title alone was worth the read, bobbin! (the rest was good too.)

there’s been a lull around here too, but it seems to have been filled up with obligations just ths same.

    vacation? what’s this “vacation”?

  4. Thanks Rowell! The title hit me and I couldn’t resist. Obligations abound. I’ll guarantee you, the word “boredom” does not exist in my reality. As for vacation… try one, for about a week, if you can. It’ll keep you sane for about six months.
    Best,
    Bobbin

  5. Don’t eat too close to the audition or you are likely to get mouth noise. Pray all you want afterward but it probably wont do much good. With a delivery like yours you don’t need the divine intervention to be cast.

  7. Erik,
True about eating too close to an audition, especially crunchy or salty foods, or anything that’s sticky.

You make me laugh. Such a wordsmith you are!
    Best,
    Bobbin
