Up Your Likability
One
way to enhance your career is to be your genuine, like able self. More
often than not, people do business with people they like.

This
doesn’t mean going to networking functions and trying to unveil what is
likable about yourself, but to look for likable qualities in others. As
described in Michelle Tillis Lederman’s book, “The 11 Laws of Likability“;
working with people you like is much easier than those who are annoying
or boring.

How to be “liked”
Improve your approachability as it helps drive likability.
Consider always wearing a name-tag at networking functions.
Cultivate existing connections and build an authentic relationship with them.
Be
entirely respectful in face to face encounters. Make sure your audience
of one is not competing with your gadgets and devices. Do not multi-task or take phone calls or check email.

Do
some homework before meeting someone you know who’ll be at a networking function you’re also attending, or
contacting that person for a project. Familiarize yourself with that
person and or the company. This shows respect and effort, and you can
also ask informed questions.

Tell
stories where people will identify with you, making them think, “Me
too!”. Remember you won’t impress and connect if all you do is talk
about your own accomplishments.

Introduce
your contact at networking functions, not just by name, rank and serial
number, but rattle off a few of that person’s accomplishments.

Bring people to life by asking them questions and give them loads of opportunity to talk about themselves.
Remember if someone gives you a memorable idea, always be sure to give them credit, if you quote them.
Oh yes, and, be sure first to ask permission, to not only give proper credit, but to elevate that person who inspired you.
A really great article!! And, just to set the record straight – thank YOU for suggesting such a great name for the audiobook panel for VOICE 2012 – could not have come up with that myself 🙂
