The Lowdown on Paying for VO Meetup groups

by | Career Advice, Voice Over, Voiceover

I received this email question last week from a curious voice over hopeful:

“Hi i found you online and had a question. I went to a voiceover meetup.com group and they invited me to become a member of their group and do PSAs. The catch is there is a fee of $25 a week to be in the group and have the main parts, or you can be a non member and do back up or bit parts. Does this sound fishy to you? Wanted a professionals opinion. Not sure b/c it’s my first intro to voiceovers/etc. thanks”

My reply…

Never pay for a promise of work. Ever.  If you’re paying to workout with a group, for instance, to pay for studio time which is run by a professional Voiceover coach who is leading and teaching, and you get mic time and that coach has a track record doing voiceover that should be ok, but what you’ve described sounds phishy.
Curious voiceover hopeful’s response…
“I agree, so I said I’d participate as a non member, without paying, to see what the deal is. I think it’s an easy way for this man to make some money. Thanks for your response! It’s nice to know there is someone out there who answers emails. I just took a shot in the dark. Glad you were there!”
