Here are some excellent reminders I clipped from Investors Business Daily:

IBD’s 10 Secrets to Success ( with a little embellishment for me)

1. How you think is everything: Always be positive. Think success, not failure. Beware of a negative environment.  Success is not about the amount of money in your bank account.

2. Decide upon your true dreams and goals: write down your specific goals and develop a plan to reach them.  I have a dream board and a business plan.

3. Take action : Goals are nothing without action. Don’t be afraid to get started. Just do it.  And do it well.

4. Never stop learning: go back to school or read books. Get training and acquire skills. Learners are earners.

5. Be persistent and work hard. Success is a marathon, not a sprint. Running a small business is indeed a marathon.

6. Learn to analyse details: Get all the facts, all the input. Learn from your mistakes. if you fail, fail forward.

7. Focus your time and money: Don’t let other people or things distract you. Turn off distractions, like your device while working. No emails or calls while recording! Don’t let others set your agenda.

8. Don’t be afraid to innovate, be different: following the herd to a sure path to mediocrity. I’m ever the contrarian at heart.

9. Deal and communicate with people effectively: No person is an island. Learn to understand and motivate others. Be a leader and a follower.  Very important for those of us who work as solopreneuers.

10. Be honest ad dependable; take responsibility. Credibility is everything and builds trust in the marketplace. Otherwise numbers 1-9 won’t matter.

  1. There’s a lot of wisdom shared in that post! I’m a huge believer in goals. And not just having them, but writing them down and developing plans to achieve them. I also made my first dream board this year, and I’ve already crossed several items off of it! I only wish I had known about those 10 years ago!!!

    • Hi Marc,
Yes to goals. First you have to figure out what they are, write them down, and then act on them. Appreciate your passing through today.

  2. That’s a terrific list that really covers the most important things. I like that it’s not just about being ‘a success’ but that it’s about being successfully happy and true to your own vision while deeply rooted in reality.

    • Lance,
You’ve nailed it! Success is not a number in one’s bank account. It’s how you live your life. Great thoughts here. Thanks!

  4. Bobbin,
Thank you so much for sharing this post. The timing is perfect. I needed that! I have printing and posted this list right next to my desk so I can look at it every day and be sure I’m continually moving in the right direction.

  5. Thanks for sharing. I’ve just started a board of inspiring quotes and thoughts to keep me on tracks after a tough week. Sets up the days nicely. I’ll be adding yours to it.

    • Nicola,
I also keep a book (journal) of inspiring quotes. Some I’ll even post up on the walls of my booth. And I go back into my journal once each month and read what I’ve collected. It tells me much about where I’ve been, and indicates where I’m headed.
      Thanks for your input.
